Li Zhaoxing Meets with the Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Ministers of a Number of Countries in Islamabad

On April 5, 2005, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing met in Islamabad with Thai vice Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai and Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Pakistani Foreign Minister Khursheed Mehmood Kasuri, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Manzur Morshed Khan, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien and Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Kasymzhomart Tokayev respectively.

Surakiart thanked the Chinese government and people for extending timely help to Thailand after the breakout of the tsunami disaster at the end of last year. He positively commented the Thailand-China relations and expressed the willingness to strengthen the all-round cooperation with China in various fields. Li said that the China-Thailand relations enjoy good momentum of development. Both sides should take the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries to constantly reinforce the mutually beneficial cooperation. They agreed to strengthen coordination within the framework of Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) and jointly push forward the cooperation process in this region.

Kasuri and Morshed Khan made positive remarks on the visit of Premier Wen Jiabao to Pakistan and Bangladesh and believed that the visit would help strengthen Pakistan-China and Bangladesh-China relations. The two foreign ministers noted that they attach great importance to their relations China and extended admiration to China's role in both the international and regional affairs. Li said that Premier Wen's visit is a major event in China-Pakistan and China-Bangladesh relations and expressed hope that both sides should make joint efforts to ensure the visit a success. China supports Pakistan and Bangladesh in playing a more important role in international and regional issues.

When meeting with Nguyen Dy Nien, Li indicated that China attaches importance to the traditional friendship and cooperation with Vietnam. In recent years the two countries have been witnessing increasingly deepened political mutual trust, rapid growth of economy and trade and gradual solution of problems left over from history. Nguyen Dy Nien agreed on Li's comment on the bilateral relations and expressed the willingness to strengthen cooperation and promote the good-neighborly friendship and cooperation between China and Vietnam.

Li and Tokayev mainly exchanged opinions on China- Kazakhstan relations and the regional situation and agreed to continue to accelerate the institutional construction of Shanghai Cooperation Organization and jointly maintain regional peace, stability and development.

Surakiart and the five foreign ministers all said that they firmly pursue the one-China policy and support China's reunification undertaking.

Li Zhaoxing and the vice Prime Minister and foreign ministers mentioned above went to Islamabad to attend the 4th ACD Foreign Ministers Meeting held from April 5 to 6.
