2005-04-13 00:00

At noon April 6, 2005, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf met in the presidential residence with visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council. Both sides exchanged opinions on how to further expand and deepen China-Pakistan mutually beneficial cooperation and other issues of common concern in a cordial atmosphere.

Musharraf extended warm welcome to Wen Jiabao. He said that Pakistan attaches great importance to Wen's visit, holding that the visit is of great significance to bilateral relations. The good momentum of development of Pakistan-China relations and the fruitful bilateral cooperation are satisfactory. Pakistan values friendship with China very much and expects to constantly push for bilateral exchanges and cooperation in all fields.

Wen said that once stepping on the land of Pakistan I have keenly felt the friendship of Pakistani people towards the Chinese people. To put it in the words of our Pakistani friends, Pakistan not just likes but loves China. I fully agree with President Musharraf's comments on bilateral ties. My talks with Prime Minister Aziz yesterday achieved fruitful results. We signed the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, laying down the legal framework for the wish of the two peoples to build long lasting friendship and for the China-Pakistan strategic partnership. The agreement on fighting against the "three forces" signed between us is of great importance to strengthening bilateral anti-terrorism and security cooperation. We also reached consensus on the "Early Harvest" program of the free trade area, which will further promote the reciprocal and mutually beneficial economic and trade cooperation between China and Pakistan. We are willing to make joint efforts with Pakistan to push for the all-round development of bilateral ties.

Both sides also talked about further expanding Pakistan-China economic and trade cooperation and specific projects concerned. Musharraf introduced the economic construction of Pakistan, noting that Pakistan welcomes Chinese businesses to make investment and build factories there, participate in Pakistan's economic construction and broaden cooperation in such areas as infrastructure, energy resources and high technology. He also expressed hope that China could increase import from Pakistan. Wen pointed out that with the joint efforts of both sides the mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Pakistan has achieved major results. Chinese businesses have advantages in infrastructure construction, high-tech and equipment manufacturing industry while Pakistan enjoys rich natural resources. Related government agencies of the two countries should strengthen and improve coordination and organization to help the business communities of the two countries build closer relations and their entrepreneurs increase mutual understanding and constantly explore new cooperation areas. My visit is accompanied by a Chinese business delegation. The entrepreneurs of the two countries can increase contacts, enhance mutual understanding and seek business opportunities, said Wen. He noted that China pays attention to the trade deficit issue of Pakistan and will adopt additional measures to import more from Pakistan. It is believed that with the signing of the Agreement on the "Early Harvest" of Bilateral Free Trade Area, part of Pakistani products will be able to be exported to China at zero tariffs, which will gradually improve the imbalanced bilateral trade.

Talking about the international and regional issues of common concern, Musharraf said that Pakistan and China hold the same stance on almost all the major international issues and will continue to strengthen coordination and cooperation. He also introduced Pakistan's opinions on South Asian situation to Wen Jiabao. Wen indicated that China feels glad to see the continuous improvement of bilateral relations between Pakistan and India and hopes that the two friendly neighbors of China can peacefully solve all of their disputes including the Jammu-Kashmir issue through negotiations on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence.
