1. Brief introduction

Peshawar-Karachi Motorway is in short known as PKM project. It starts from Karachi, the largest city of Pakistan in the south, then passes through Lahore, the second largest city and ends at Peshawar in the north, an important town adjacent to Afghanistan. The PKM project (Sukkur-Multan section) is undertaken by China State Construction and Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the largest construction company in the world. The Sukkur-Multan section is 392km long and 31.25m wide. It is a 6-lane access controlled Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) motorway with a total cost of 294.3 billion Pakistani Rupees. It is funded by China’s EXIM Bank. It is the largest under construction EPC infrastructure project of CSCEC in the world, as well as the largest project under construction of CPEC.

The ground breaking ceremony of the project was held at Sukkur on May 6, 2016. The National Highway Authority officially announced the commencement of the project on August 05, 2016. The project is planned to accomplish on August 5, 2019.

2. Latest progress

Until now, 373km of access road was constructed, 31.75 million cubic meters of embankment was completed. Among the total length of 392km, 378km has been handed over to the project, 356.6km has cleared surface, 343.3km is under construction. 80% of tunnel pipes have been casted, and 51.3% of tunnel pipes have been installed.

3. Corporate social responsibility

1) The project has paid USD 39,920,404.5 taxes since the commencement.

2) The project has employed more than 9800 local people.

3) The project has made donations to its local employees, orphans, and school children.
